A maintenance planner once told me:

“Our PM program is over 90% compliant.”

I asked a simple question:

“Are the PMs actually preventing failures?”

PM compliance measures activity.

Reliability measures outcomes.

You can achieve 100% PM compliance and still have a poor PM program.

The real questions are:

  • Are the right tasks being performed?
  • Are they based on failure modes?
  • Are technicians given clear instructions?
  • Are acceptance criteria defined?

A completed PM is not necessarily an effective PM.
