Description of fault finding and Repair Information

When you are called to fix a breakdown, what comes to mind?

Breakdown calls are always disheartening because of their impact on production and the need to get the machine back in operation. This put the technician under pressure to fix the problem as soon as possible. Because getting back to production is the utmost priority, it is paramount to pay close attention to the failed component or unit. Details from this observation will determine if the problem could be solved or just fixed.

When you are called upon to resolve a problem, it is important to STOP and THINK. Assess the obvious cause of the problem. For example, a mesh belt is being ripped off.  One of the quickest things to do is to fix the connecting pin. On the other hand, observing the edges could instantly give an idea of the possible cause of the wear. If shiny marks are observed on the edges, then the belt may be rubbing against a harder surface.

Note, that the technician doesn’t need to find the root cause of the problem on the spot, but a clear description of fault finding and repair information is crucial for effective root cause analysis and in providing subsequent countermeasures.
