Understanding Product Design
A product is like a house, with different rooms serving different purposes. One room can serve more than one purpose, but the original intent of each room must not be overlooked.
When designing a product, the landing page is the equivalent of the seating room, or parlor, as it may be called. This is usually the most attractive part of the house, as that is where most of your visitors will be entertained. This is similar to your landing page. It must be so beautified that people, just by having a view of each, can tell a good story about your residents.
Everything needed to make the living room attractive should be in place. The choice of design for a living room could range from a simple, elegant design to a quite sophisticated one. The arrangement of furniture should be taken very seriously, as should the available spaces for movement. A crowded living room may not show all the beauty of the room, but a simple, bright design could prove to be welcoming to visitors. This is the key concept of designing a landing page.
The next important aspect to consider is the movement from the living room to other parts of the building. From the living room, one is able to move to different parts of the house easily without too many restrictions, but not every part of the house is accessible from the living room.
The free movement back and forth from the living room is the menu navigation button that allows one to move from the living room to the bedroom, general washroom, balcony, dining section, kitchen, laundry, jacket wardrobe, and so on. The most accessible part of the building is usually linked to the living room, while other parts of the building are accessible only from a room after the living room. For example, a dressing room is usually located in the bedroom, which can only be accessed from the bedroom, while the bedroom is accessed from the living room.
Sometimes, the living could be extended to other rooms through a passage leading to different rooms. This is like the options given to a menu item, with different items to choose from. From the selected option, you move to the room, which would have fewer options to choose from, such as your dressing section with your wardrobe and your washroom with all your bath and body items. The depth of each section should be such that not more than three doors need to be opened before being able to access the parlor or the outside of the building. Like from your washroom to the bedroom and subsequently to the parlor.
Many a time, before the parlor, there is usually a small anteroom that serves as a waiting room, leading to the main room or parlor. This is the login and sign-up page that leads to the main landing page. This waiting is mostly bypassed if you already have the key. If your login information is available, and in some cases, it is left open during the day when most members of the family are playing outside, There are also other rooms that are usually not used or accessed all the time, like the gym, library, document storage, garage, etc.
This is the analogy of the product design concept that, when followed, would always lead to an attractive and intuitive design that gives users a familiar experience close to that of their everyday lives. This concept of design is very relatable and gives the utmost satisfaction to users while retaining the best aesthetics.
