The power of observation

As an employee taking up a leadership position in a technical field such as engineering or maintenance, it is important to spend a few weeks observing the different personalities that make up your team and the available systems and processes in place. This will help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of the team and better understand the existing structure.

In maintenance, this approach can be likened to a maintenance system review. It is a process of observing the status quo, understanding how things are done, and absorbing the dynamics of the workplace. This will allow you to evaluate your leadership approach towards achieving your desired goal.

Even during the interview stages, many managers could identify some things to implement based on their wealth of experience. This energy must be controlled, as different things work for different people, and your path must be aligned with the current organizational goal if it is to fly. So, the best thing to do within the first few weeks is to observe and review the existing system.

Going forward, is the presentation of your maintenance plan to the stakeholders, clearly addressing the noticeable problems from your detailed observations and review of the existing system.
